Review for Vlad by Stacey Rourke

Vlad by Stacey Rourke
Blurb:

History believes me to be a merciless savage. A terror upon the Earth known as The Impaler. Archaic lore whispers I am the first of the vampire lineage.

These claims ... are all painted in bloody truth.

Now, while the world watches in fear, a war is brewing. Humans are targeting vampires in merciless attacks to force us back into the shadows.

They woke me to be their weapon.
They know not my loathing for my own kind.
Even I cannot say for certain whose side I’m on.

I have bowed before the alter of darkness rooted in the Nosferatu bloodline. Been forced to drink of its bitter sacrament. They refer to me as The Son of The Dragon, and I laugh. For I, alone, know that malevolent essence is one no man could ever tame.

Review:

OH MY GOD! I mean I really didn't think I would read, much less love, another vampire book. Stacey Rourke proved me wrong with Veiled , book 1 in the series, and my love for this series has just grown with book 2.

Vlad follows Vinx and the gang as they set to expose the current situations in the Nosferatu community. This is book 2 in the series and I would highly recommend reading the first book before you read this one.

The Veiled Series has such a different take on the whole Vampire genre of books that I find myself just so very deeply invested in all that is going on in this book world. I love how Stacey Rourke integrated the story of Vlad the Impaler and Dracula into this series/book world. I am always left in awe of how flawlessly the story just FITS!

I loved  the backstories and flashbacks, if you have been reading my reviews for a while you know I love a good backstory. I also enjoyed the switching POVs, I think it made for a really well rounded story overall. As always, I loved the writing style and the trademark Stacey Rourke sarcasm and wit.

And can we talk about the ending!? YAAASSS QUEEN!! I LOVED it.

Incredible and exciting. Can't wait for the next book!

Review for Apocalypse 5 by Stacey Rourke

Apocalypse 5 by Stacey Rourke

Blurb:

The end of the world is coming. How or when, scientists can’t agree upon. For decades, Earth’s best line of defense has been a team of young soldiers known as the Apocalypse Five, forced into virtual reality simulations to train for Doom’s Day. But, this is no game. Death on the grid is brutally final and calls up the next in a long line of cadets. Stationed aboard the AT-1-NS Starship, the A5 are celebrities thrust into the limelight by a calling they didn’t choose. All it takes is one unscheduled mission, showing seventeen-year-old team leader Detroit a harsh and unfathomable reality, to shake the A5’s belief in all they thought they knew. After questioning people with the power to destroy them, the team is framed for a crime they didn’t commit and marked for death. Now, the hunt is on. Can the Apocalypse Five expose the truth the starship would kill to keep hidden? Or, will their bravery end in a public execution?

Review:

With every book Stacey Rourke just blows me away. I love reading SciFi and Dystopian books and Apocalypse 5 combines them beautifully into this action packed novel.

Apocalypse 5 follows the journey of a team of 5 teens preparing for the end of the world. It has the classic sense of humour and sass that to me has become a Stacey Rourke signature. I honestly loved the story so much. It had me hooked from the opening line:

I mean when the opening line is so amazing you know its going to be a good book right?

As always I loved the writing style. And I absolutely adored the characters. I loved how thought out the whole concept was. The whole book world seemed so well rounded from the way they talked right down to the descriptions. Everything tied together to make it one of my favourite reads of 2018.

Amazing, amazing, amazing! Can't wait for book 2!

Review for I Like You, I Love Her by J.R. Rogue

I Like You, I Love Her by J.R. Rogue

Blurb:

In a lot of ways, I was one of the lucky ones. My high school crush liked me back. It should have been magic and fire, but it was tragic and brutal. I wrote it that way, anyways.

His name was Bryan Winthrop. He was our high school basketball star. The prom king. The most beautiful boy I had ever laid eyes on. He liked me — the theatre geek who never should have caught his eye — but he loved her.

It’s been more than 10 years since the homecoming dance. Since the night he kissed me, breaking both of our hearts for the first time.

After the scandal, after graduation, I left our small town and made a name for myself on Broadway, then in Hollywood. I didn’t mean for the play I wrote about our high school affair to blow up. I didn’t mean for it to reach all the way back to my roots, wreaking havoc, wrecking families.

Bryan Winthrop and I were not friends, not lovers.

But I’m back. And for one summer — if she lets us — maybe we can be.

Review:

I was lucky enough to get a ARC for I Like You I Love Her. There is just something about J.R. Rogue's books. This is her second novel and it has blown me away again. I loved her first book Kiss Me Like You Mean It. It was so beautifully written and the ending just, I still can't...

I Like You, I Love Her follows the story of Sevrin as she returns to her hometown and has to face her past. Told through alternating Past and Present chapters, it tells a compelling and unputdownable story about second chances, family, friendship and loving yourself.

What I love about this book, is that the characters are all so human, so relateable. It doesn't have perfect characters that are held up to an impossible standard or kept on a pedestal. It has flawed characters with a past that are trying to get to a better place. I loved the family and friendship dynamics shown in the book. It just speaks to the author's impeccable ability to portray the characters and interactions so well, that you can relate to it.

I am so in love with J.R. Rogue's writing style. Her poetic background certainly shows through. It was both soft and thought provoking. The story just flows so well and I just couldn't wait to get back to reading the book as soon as I put it down.

Overall, another beautifully written book that will resonate with the readers.

Review:
PLEASE TELL ME THERE WILL BE A BOOK 2!!!!! This book you guys, I can't even. ♥

Sometimes there's a book that you and you just know, you just know you are going to love it. That was this book for me. I saw the title and I was like yep, this is going to be a good one. And it was SO GOOD!!

The Starfish Talisman was funny, relateable and spooky. Let me tell you, I read every night till I fall asleep and you guys, I had to stop reading this one for a couple days because I was so spooked out. I couldn't read it at night and not start to hear things. My imagination was going wild!

I loved the characters, especially Wiley ♥ that doggo has my heart. All the characters felt well thought out and had their own distinct voice. Even the dogs. The myth around the story felt well thought out and was really intriguing. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The only thing is I wish that the book was a little more polished. Other than that this book was amazing.

I also loved the writing style. It flowed really well and had me hooked from page one. When a book keeps you up and reading, even when you're sick, you know it is a good one.

Will definitely re-read and beg the author for book 2. ;)

Overall, fantastically creepy read. LOVED IT!

Wow August has been stressful af!

It feels like its just one thing after another. I think I have been running around just doing things to help and not really taking all that much time to decompress and relax. Can't really say much about who/what I was helping with, not my story to tell. Regardless it sucks.

24 in 48 Readathon July 2018!

This past weekend was the 24 in 48 Readathon for July. It was my first Readathon challenge ever and the first #24in48 too.

The Challenge - For the uninitiated (yes, now that I have participated in one of these challenges, I have been initiated)

The premise of 24 in 48 Readathon / Challenge is simple - To Read for 24 hours out of the 48 hours of the weekend. Seems simple enough right?

The challenge appealed to me because -
A. Its endearing to me, the idea of reading together. I've always loved reading together, be it with my Mom - both of us reading our own books sharing the comfort of books and loving company, or with my book babes - one of us reading a book then forcing the rest to read or just picking and reading a book together. The idea of just reading with passionate book lovers from all around the world was something special for me. I mean if you think about it, someone across the globe from me was reading at the same time that I was reading. How could I not love it?
(I'm a ball of mush I know)

B. Its a book reading challenge! I mean how could I, a Third Generation Bookworm, not love it? Its not possible.

Review for Webley and The World Machine

Webley and The World Machine by Zachary Paul Chopchinski

Blurb:
A world beneath our world.
An army of mechanical monsters.
A war to end all wars.

When childhood best friends Adal and Arija discover a steam powered world hidden deep within the earth, the result is life changing. Webley and the Dwellers of The World Machine work to keep the Earth turning. But when Arija and Adal stumble onto a growing conflict that will destroy the Earth, they find themselves forced to fight.

Will they be able to stop the war in time or will they regret ever having set foot in The World Machine?

Review:
This book was so gooooddd! I'm beginning to think I really enjoy Steampunk books.

Webley and the World Machine was such a fun read. I loved the storyline and the plot. It was such a different book. But I was absolutely SOLD just as soon as I saw the art in the book. Put maps, art, music or anything of that sort in a book and I'm 100% more likely to read it and love it.

I just wish the book was polished a little bit more and I wish the ending was a little more fleshed out. Like the entire book is so full of little details and art and wonderfulness that the ending to me felt a little abrupt.

But I adored the characters and the writing style flowed well too.

Overall, a great read! ♥

Entombed in Glass by Stacey Rourke

Blurb:

Mirror, mirror on the wall.
What’s behind that fated call?
He’s the seer of present, future, and past,
Yet remains a nameless face entombed in glass.

Raised as a servant in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, Alastor worked his way up to a regal member of the Royal Guard. Only as a decorated soldier did he stand a chance of winning the hand of the woman he’s loved since childhood … Poseidon’s only daughter, Princess Vanessa. But, when the war against humans rages, dark magics are evoked to give the mermen a fighting chance. Temporarily granted legs, they charge from the sea into a doomed battle.

Doing the bidding of his masters as a trusted pawn,
The claims of his loyalty couldn’t be more wrong.

Waking on land, with bodies all around, Alastor’s lone goal becomes returning to the ocean and the only life he’s ever known. A plan that is quickly diverted when Hades, Lord of the Underworld, appears with a twisted agenda all his own. Cast to a land far from the lapping comforts of home, Alastor’s sole companion is a troubled misfit named Sterling that soon comes to depend on him. Trained to be a hero, how far is Alastor willing to go to return to the woman he loves? And can he live with the sacrifices he's forced to make?

Each day he schemes to break free from their thrall,
and honor a self-made vow … to kill them all.

Review:
GOOD LORD THIS BOOK!! SO GOOD!!

I just wrote down and deleted a paragraph full of spoilers that I just typed because this book has me so excited! (Can you tell I'm excited by the number of exclamation points I've already used? )

I absolutely love everything related to Alice in Wonderland and all the madness that comes with it. This book had all the madness that I love and so much more. I couldn't have guessed the twists and the back stories that was weaved into this brilliant book.

I honestly don't know how Stacey Rourke does it. The way she writes these stories and re-imagines them in a way that makes it feel like it was meant to be written this way. It just feels right.

As always I loved the writing style and the characters. Honestly when I went into this book I had NO IDEA that the story would take the turn it took. (Did that even make sense?) But I am so in love with this story, its not even funny.

I loved all the different possibilities and theories that Stacey Rourke has brought into the stories that we love already. I can't wait to see what she does next with this series. CAN I HAVE THE NEXT BOOK ALREADY!? I am ready to meet you know who. (No not Voldemort :P)

Overall, a fantastic book. LOVED IT!
Can't wait to read Pursuing Madness!!!! ♥

Review for The Colony by Craig Anderson

The Colony by Craig Anderson

Blurb:

Tomorrow is the day that I die. I have known this for the 18 months I have been alive, but I'm still not prepared. It all comes down to the final tests, the ones that determine who is the fittest, the fastest, the strongest. I am none of those things. I will never leave the colony, never see outside the imposing grey walls, never even meet a woman.

My entire existence will be summed up as an increment on Eve's spreadsheet, another digit in the failure column. Only a handful make it outside, to witness the world that mankind destroyed. It all started with the bees...

Review:

The Colony was a fantastic dystopian read. Only those who survive the tests get to leave and get freedom. And Ben is the clear underdog in the tests for survival. And that's all I'm going to say because I don't want to spoil the book for you.

I think the best dystopian novels are the ones that seem the most possible. This book was so engaging and seemed so possible. I think with all the news about the bees dying and global warming and the technological aspects of things, the book seemed even more real. I loved the dystopian world that the author created.

The characters were great with distinct personalities. I also loved the writing style, it flowed really well and kept a good pace.

I will say though the ending... I did not expect that double twist there. SO GOOD.

Overall, fantastic read, loved the book!

___________________________________________________________

PS: I was out the other day and saw a shit ton of bees just on the ground, dead or dying. I'd be lying if I said that it didn't freak me out. It did. It totally did.

Review for Book of Watchers by Mary Ting

Book of Watchers by Mary Ting

Blurb:

Enoch wants to live an ordinary life. He’s content to lie low, skip his college classes, and avoid committing to any one girl. But ordinary isn’t on the syllabus for Enoch because at night, he dreams of demons. Vivid dreams that leave him wanting escape more than ever. When they escape his dreams and attack him during daylight, his reality becomes a nightmare.

As he pieces together the meaning behind the encounters, supernatural creatures emerge. Demons. Vampires. Witches. Angels. And they all want something from him. In a supernatural world he never thought possible, Enoch uncovers a secret that either will destroy him or force him to become much more than he ever wanted.

Review:

I was so excited to read the new series by Mary Ting and she did not disappoint. Book of Watchers is full of mystery, suspense, drama, mythology, and supernatural creatures. What else could you ask for in a fantasy book?

I haven't read a book by her since I read Crossroads series. This book reminded me again why I love her books. Her writing style just draws you in and engages you in the story completely. I also really liked the characters.

I will admit, initially when I started the book I was a little confused with all the different characters and their connections to each other but I sorted it out as the book progressed. I was pleasantly surprised by the turn of events towards the ending of the book.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series!

NOTE: I was provided with an uncorrected ARC in exchange for an honest review, so I'm not really including comments on editing and such.

Review for Kiss Me Like You Mean It by J. R. Rogue

Kiss Me Like You Mean It by J. R. Rogue

Blurb:
My love is poison. His kiss is mine.

“The first time he saw me I was shattered glass, and he was a shadow. If I had stayed, he would have just faded away.”

It’s strange how easy it is to tell our stories to a stranger’s eyes. The truth about Connor Stratford and I had always been a sad tale. Over ten years of chasing, tears, lies, vows, and leaving. Two people who never loved each other at the same time, but couldn’t let each other go.

Now here I was telling our story over drinks midday in an airport bar with my old diary clutched in my hand. Telling some version of our story, anyway.

I left him once with no goodbye. Now I was returning home to give him what he needed to move on.

“It’s important. It’s what you’re thinking.”

I knew what his message meant, sent in the middle of the night after I woke from a fever dream.

He was finally ready, and so was I. I just needed to finally give him the kiss he begged for.
The one that meant goodbye.

Review:
This book, just where do I even start?

I loved J. R. Rogue's poetry book that I had read last year Exits, Desires, & Slow Fires. When I read that she had a novel coming out, I was so excited. Then I saw the cover, and come on you know its absolutely gorgeous. I mean look at it! Now that I've finished the book I love the cover even more. It makes me see how much thought the author has put into the book.

I absolutely loved the writing style. It was so beautifully written that it had me hooked right from the start. I also loved the characters, all broken and flawed in their own way.

What I loved most about this book was the raw quality that comes across in it. It just reads so well and seems so believable. This book by no means is a happy and fun one. Its messy and tragic and heartbreaking. It forces you to see the ugly side of things and makes you change your perspective.

And the ending. GODS. I. did. not. expect. that. So well written.

Overall, it was a powerful and raw book that will make you feel. Loved it.
